As anticipated programming production costs at ABC were up versus last year?s Q3 due to the timing of pilot development write-offs and more scripted programming in the current year given last year?s writers? strike. These higher costs were partially offset by increased international sales of our shows. The timing of affiliate revenue recognition at ESPN was a key driver of our results at cable networks. Revenue recognition for a portion of our affiliate fees is dependent on when we fulfill covenants related to the quantity of live sports programming. Last year we achieved certain programming commitment levels during our third fiscal quarter. This year we reached those levels early in the fourth quarter. As a result we had an effective year-over-year increase in net affiliate revenue deferrals for Q3 of $116 million.

The affiliate search business was somewhat stronger than & during 2Q but we believe this was a temporary deceleration in the longer term trend of this business. Traffic acquisition cost was 28% of total GAAP revenue. TAC rates continued to rise slightly year-over-year as a result of higher TAC on new deals and a mix of affiliate revenue during the quarter. Rounding out the revenue line listings revenue was down 21% to $106 million on a reported basis but down 6% excluding the impact of the sale of Kelkoo. Fees revenue was down 8% to $105 million primarily due to the transitional revenue items we have outlined on previous calls. Turning to profitability second quarter CF was $385 million. Excluding the cash portion of restructuring charges incurred in Q2 however CF was $451 million.

For the second quarter revenue at our national programming networks AMC IFC and WE tv increased 7% to $199 million and ACF for the quarter was $96 million an increase of 5% as compared to the prior year period. The quarterly increase in revenue included 10% increase in affiliate revenue and a 2% increase in ad revenue compared to the prior year period. This moderate advertising revenue increase was accomplished in what is widely considered to be a challenging market due to the economy. The ACF increase was driven largely by this higher revenue partly offset by higher programming expenses in the quarter. For the second year in a row AMC received more primetime Emmy nominations than any other basic cable channel. ur series Mad Men Breaking Bad and Storytellers combined for a total of 23 nominations.

Already international markets are starting to have an effect on overall results. For example in its fiscal third quarter ended in May News Corp. said Fox International Channels which houses about 140 services reaching more than 350 million households increased its earnings contribution to the company by 25% compared to the prior year driven by advertising and affiliate revenue growth in Latin America and Europe. In 2008 Viacom saw international revenue (including filmed entertainment) rise 13.

CheapTweet Aims to Connect Retailers With Deal-Hungry Twitter Users

In some cases retailers will pay for sponsored links and prominent placement on the CheapTweet page. In other cases CheapTweet selects retailers that are offering what it considers the best deals in order to attract a bigger Twitter audience. Some relationships may have an affiliate revenue share model but right now all retail placements and terms are negotiated by Jenn Deering-Davis who is the chief community officer at CheapTweet parent company Appozite and administrator of the Twitter account. Last week CheapTweet posted what it considers two major developments: it opened a relationship with Best Buy and also created a new service allowing retailers to host “stores” on its site. According to Deering-Davis “we’ll be engaging in sponsored Twitter conversations as part of this partnership talking with the CheapTweet community about laptops and mobile phones telling you more about a few of Best Buy’s programs. Most importantly we want to share some of Best Buy’s best back-to-school deals. ” A CheapTweet store puts a retailer’s brand at the forefront and reduces CheapTweet branding to a small navigation bar.
